Dr. Julie Ellis, Ph.D 
 "Seabirds as sentinels for ocean health." The Seabird Ecological Assessment Network (SEANET) is a citizen science project that monitors marine bird mortality at beaches along the U.S. Atlantic coast.  In addition to monitoring the numbers and species of dead marine birds, SEANET works with veterinarians to diagnose causes of disease and mortality.  In this talk, Dr. Ellis discusses findings from several ongoing SEANET projects including plastic ingestion by pelagic seabirds, mass mortality events of Common Eiders (a species of sea duck), and antibiotic resistance in marine birds and mammals.  Dr. Ellis is a world-renown expert on the island ecology of seabirds.

Michael T. Walsh, DVM, M.S., DACZM

Dr. Walsh has spent most of his professional life working in aquaculture and fish medicine.  He has a strong interest in preventive health care for fish with emphasis on water quality and nutritional management, and special interest in reef fish, particularly Acanthurids (surgeonfish).  Dr. Walsh was the Director of Veterinary Services at Sea World Adventure Park in Orlando, FL, where he worked with marine mammals, avian species, fish and sharks, and did research furthering the advancement of animal health.  Working over 20 years with marine mammals, Dr. Walsh is currently the Clinical Associate Professor and Associate Director of Aquatic Animal Health at University of Florida, School of Veterinary Medicine.


Dr. Walsh will be lecturing on Thursday, June 12th, at 5pm in the Upper Auditorium.  This will be a ZEW/SCUBA Club event.


Dr. Judi Bell

Dr. Judi Bell is coming to Ross to lecture on ferret medicine and exotic medicine in general.  She will be giving lectures on Wednesday, May 21st, and Thursday, May 22nd, as well as meeting with small groups of ZEW Club members on those days.
